Call for High School and Undergraduate Science Project Papers


Did you participate in Science Fair(s) individually or in a team of up to three persons, or participate in experimental science or engineering projects in 2013 involving Marine Sciences?

If so, we invite you to send us a project abstract of 300 words or less and a technical paper describing your project for consideration of special awards to be presented by the Education Committees of the American Salvage Association (ASA) and the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA). Your project will be evaluated by both associations for awards with one submission. Papers and abstracts will be accepted from August 1, 2013 - September 15, 2013. Winners will be notified on or before October 15, 2013.

Competition will be divided into 2 groups for prizes, High School 9-12th grades and Undergraduate students. 1st place winners will be invited to receive their awards at an industry function event of either the American Salvage Association and / or the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA) in the fall of 2013.

To be considered your project should focus on one of the following broad Marine Science subject areas.

Marine environmental care, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Meteorology, Underwater Robotics, Air emissions from ships, Alternative fuel supplies for ships, Oil and Chemical spill remediation, Offshore Well control, Diving systems, Marine Biology, Marine Ecosystems, Marine Microorganisms, Ship design, Ship breaking, recovery of sunken ships, cargo, fuel or pollutants, other marine salvage related or marine environmental projects.

All projects will be considered for awards by both ASA and NAMEPA. Projects may win prizes in both contests.

ASA Prizes:

1st prize $500, 2nd prize $250- 3rd prize $100-, custom engraved plaque and recognition published in industry publication. Additional "special recognition" awards may be presented.

NAMEPA Prizes:

1st prize $500, 2nd prize $250- 3rd prize $100-, custom engraved plaque and recognition published in industry publication. Additional "special recognition" awards may be presented.

NAMEPA Mission Statement:

The North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA) is a maritime industry-led initiative which operates as a voluntary, non-profit and non-governmental organization committed to preserving the marine environment through educating seafarers, port communities and students about the need, and strategies, for protecting this important global resource and engages maritime businesses, government and the public to "Save our Seas" by promoting sound environmental practices.

American Salvage Association Education Committee Mission Statement:

The Education Committee of the American Salvage Association is committed to promoting information and opportunities towards professional development for career minded groups and individuals interested in the art and science of Marine Salvage through interactive experience with ASA salvage professionals. Our goal is to support career development in all maritime disciplines inclusive but not limited to development of seafarers licensed and unlicensed, encouragement for licensed officers to reach senior officer status and gain experience at sea to provide expertise to the industry in due course. For non seafarers promoting math, sciences, engineering, naval architecture, diving, environmental sciences, robotics, marine insurance, maritime law, ocean engineering, accounting, logistics, and others related fields.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Parental Consent (under 18 years old)
  • High School Prize - Enrolled in 9th - 12th grades during 2013
  • Undergraduate Prize - Undergraduate student during 2013


Expectation Requirements:

  • Abstract of paper 300 words or less
  • Technical Paper, no size limitation
  • Due date prior to September 15, 2013, 2359 hours GMT


Prizes (offered by both NAMEPA and ASA Education Committee):

  • High School submission - $500, 250, 100 (1st 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Undergraduate submission - $500, 250, 100 (1st 2nd, 3rd places)
  • All prize winners will receive recognition in industry publications
  • 1st Prize Winners will receive invitation to receive awards at industry functions.
  • Additional "special recognition" awards may be presented dependent upon submissions.
